A 30 Day Guide to Healing from the Loss of Your Pet is a spiral bound book which is relatively small in size. It could easily fit in a purse or briefcase and be carried with the pet owner, if desired.
Written by Gael J. Ross, the book is based not only on Gael’s personal journey through the loss of her beloved pet but also on her professional experience as a licensed clinical social worker and her discussions with other pet owners who have suffered the loss of a pet.

I was quite impressed with A 30 Day Guide to Healing from the Loss of Your Pet. The book covers some very important information but one of the most important things stressed in the guide is the fact that non-pet owners often do not understand what a pet owner goes through with the loss of a pet and may underestimate or even trivialize the amount of grief experienced. In Gael’s own words: “In our society, there is often a message that there must be something wrong with anyone who feels despair and anguish over the loss of an animal. Because of this message, the survivors of animal loss are often left feeling alone and crazy because they are having such a strong reaction to their loss.” A 30 Day Guide to Healing from the Loss of Your Pet urges pet owners not to fall victim to this type of thinking or behavior. Grief is an understandable and normal reaction to the loss of a pet and pet owners need to come to terms with their grief and move through the stages of recovery in order to remain healthy. I think this is an important message.
I also like that the book is a 30-day guide, with a new offering in the guide for each day. I think it is helpful for a grieving pet owner to be reminded that he/she is not alone and that their experiences are completely normal. The 30-day layout of the book makes this happen, at least through those first 30 days, by providing a reason to keep referring to the guide. In many cases, when you are grieving the loss of a pet, I think it is helpful to simply know that you are not alone, that other people have experienced the same thoughts, feelings and emotions. This guide relays that beautifully.
The other thing in the guide that is very helpful is a list of resources, many of which are pet loss hotlines. These resources are invaluable in connecting pet owners with the help they need to recover from their loss.
