Cosequin for Cats – Product Evaluation
Arthritis in cats is over-looked and simply attributed to “old age” changes. However, it is important to realize that age is not a disease and if your cat is slowing down or becoming less mobile, arthritis may be the cause. A study performed in 2007 showed that as many as 30% of the cats evaluated over the age of eight years showed signs of arthritis. That’s almost one out of every three cats. (Source: University Of Glasgow (2007, August 29). Cats Do Suffer From Arthritis, Study Shows. ScienceDaily. Retrieved May 28, 2011.) If this is the case, Cosequin for Cats may be an option.
I have used Cosequin for Cats for two of my cats with success. The product contains glucosamine and chondroitin, both of which help to improve joint health, which in turn helps to relieve the pain caused by arthritis.
Cosequin for Cats is not a cure for arthritis. There is no product that will do that.
It may take some time (sometimes several weeks) of giving the Cosequin before you see positive results. However, I do believe it can be effective in treating cats for arthritis pain.
Cosequin is also sometimes used for treating inflammation associated with feline lower urinary tract disease. This disease (actually a complex of many diseases) can make your cat very uncomfortable. It results in frequent urges to urinate, sometimes causes bloody urine and frequently culminates in inappropriate urination (peeing outside the litter box.) I have not used Cosequin extensively for this disease but I do know of a few cases where it seemed to help. It would not be my choice for a first line of treatment but may be considered in chronic cases, especially where other remedies have failed.
Cosequin for cats is safe with very few if any side effects associated.
Who Can Benefit from Using Cosequin for Cats?
If your cat is a senior and has become less active, arthritis is a potential cause and Cosequin for Cats may help. There are other diseases in which your veterinarian may recommend it as well, such as feline lower urinary tract disease.
